Appel de Layene in Yoff/Cambérène

The Appel de Layene, or Appel de Seydina Limamou Lahi, is the annual commemoration of the 1883 declaration by Seydina Limamou Laye, founder of Senegal's Layene Sufi community, that he was the Mahdi. Marking its 146th anniversary in January 2026, it is celebrated across the Lebou coastal communities of Yoff, Ngor and Cambérène.

On May 24, 1883, a Lebou fisherman and farmer from the village of Yoff named Seydina Limamou Lahi declared himself the Mahdi, the divinely guided figure awaited within Islamic tradition, taking the name Laye, understood as a Wolof rendering of Allah, and setting in motion what became the Layene Sufi path, a religious community now estimated to represent about six percent of Senegal's population.
