Kankourang Festival de Ziguinchor in Ziguinchor
The Kankourang in Ziguinchor is the Casamance regional expression of the UNESCO-recognized Mandinka masked circumcision ritual, in which red bark-fiber-clad figures patrol the streets protecting initiates. Local authorities in Ziguinchor have repeatedly restricted or suspended nighttime Kankourang outings in recent years over public order and safety concerns.
Casamance, and its regional capital Ziguinchor in particular, sits within the historic heartland of Mandinka culture in Senegambia, making it one of the settings where the Kankourang, the masked ritual tied to boys' circumcision and initiation, remains most deeply embedded in community life.
