The story

October Salon Belgrade in Belgrade

October Salon is Belgrade's major contemporary art exhibition, founded in 1960 by the city's cultural authorities and run by the Cultural Centre of Belgrade since becoming an international, curator-led event in 2004. Since 2014 it has been held every two years, bringing in guest curators and international artists alongside Serbian contemporary art.

When Belgrade's city authorities founded October Salon in 1960, the intent was straightforward: an annual review of the city's fine art, timed to October 20, the anniversary of Belgrade's liberation at the end of the Second World War.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

October Salon has evolved more than most Serbian festivals over its history: founded in 1960 as an annual review of Serbian fine art tied to the anniversary of Belgrade's liberation, it expanded to applied arts in 1967, then transformed in 2004 into an internationally curated exhibition under the Cultural Centre of Belgrade, with guest curators such as Rene Block, Lorand Hegyi, and David Elliott shaping successive editions

02

The mystery stays covered

Since 2014 it has run as a biennial rather than an annual event

03

The city starts moving

Its awards, including the main prize and a Cultural Centre of Belgrade award, have gone to artists working across painting, installation, and community-based practice, most recently honoring a project preserving the cultural heritage of a Roma settlement in Valjevo
