The story

Zmaj Children Games in Novi Sad

Zmajeve decje igre, or Zmaj Children's Games, is a children's literature and culture festival held every June in Novi Sad, Serbia, named for the 19th-century poet Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj. First staged in 1957 as a festival of children's poetry, drama, and puppet theater, it gathers young readers with writers, illustrators, and publishers each year around Zmaj's Day.

In 1957, the venerable Serbian cultural institution Matica srpska organized a modest gathering in Sremska Kamenica devoted to children's poetry, drama, and puppet theater.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few children's festivals in Europe can claim a continuous history stretching back to 1957, when Matica srpska first organized a festival of children's poetry, drama, and puppet theater in Sremska Kamenica

02

The mystery stays covered

Officially founded on June 21, 1958, timed to Zmaj's Day, the event was renamed Zmajeve decje igre in 1969 and has run in Novi Sad ever since, making it one of the oldest dedicated children's culture festivals still operating in the region

03

The city starts moving

Its programming centers on literature rather than spectacle: readings, puppet performances, and awards for children's writers and illustrators sit alongside a companion December event, Zmajdani, marking the poet's own birthday, giving the festival a rare year-round presence in Novi Sad's cultural calendar
