Immaculate Conception Processions in Victoria

Every 8 December, Victoria's Catholic community marks the feast of the Immaculate Conception with Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Independence Avenue, followed by a procession of the Virgin Mary's statue through the surrounding streets. The date is one of the fixed points on Seychelles' Catholic liturgical calendar, drawing parishioners from across Mahe into the capital.

Catholicism arrived in Seychelles with French colonization in the second half of the eighteenth century, carried by planters, enslaved Africans baptized into their masters' faith, and later by missionary clergy who built the islands' first permanent churches.
