Paddle Masquerade Festival in Freetown/Nationwide
Paddle is a Sierra Leonean street masquerade rooted in Mende and Temne tradition, in which costumed dancers parade through eastern and central Freetown from Cline Town to St. John, escorted by the Eastern Paddle Hunting Society, drummers, and thousands of onlookers, most prominently around Independence Day.
Long before it became a citywide street spectacle, Paddle served a quieter purpose within Mende and Temne communities: a masked performance through which elders and performers could pass down moral lessons, community values, and the narratives that held a society together.
