The story

Kremnica Gags in Kremnica

Kremnicke gagy (Kremnica Gags), subtitled the European Festival of Humour and Satire, is an international multi-genre festival held in late August in Kremnica since 1981. Known as Slovenske gagy until 1998, it is the only long-running festival in Central Europe focused specifically on independent comedy and satire.

Kremnica, a small central Slovak town famous as the site of the world's oldest continuously operating mint, has hosted Kremnicke gagy, the European Festival of Humour and Satire, every late August since 1981, making it one of the country's longest-running cultural festivals.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Kremnicke gagy's specific niche, comedy and satire across theatre, street performance, and stand-up, has run continuously since 1981, making it one of Slovakia's longest-established cultural festivals and, per its own positioning, the only festival in the Central European region focused programmatically on independent comedy

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival awards a Grand Prix and the Zlaty gunar (Golden Gander) prize for street and movement-based performance, and its 35th edition alone featured nearly 300 performers across thirteen stages

03

The city starts moving

It was also the first Slovak festival to formally showcase stand-up comedy as a genre, and its Academy of Humour has drawn presiding figures such as Czech actor and director Bolek Polivka, with lifetime achievement honors given to major Slovak comedic performers including Milan Lasica and Stano Dancak
