The story

Laufarija Cerkno in Cerkno

Cerkljanska laufarija is a Shrovetide custom of Cerkno in which about 25 masked laufarji, wearing 26 hand-carved wooden masks called larfe, appear on successive Sundays from New Year through Shrove Tuesday. It was the first carnival custom entered into Slovenia's Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2012 and was declared Intangible Heritage of National Importance by government decree in 2014.

Cerkno's laufarija takes its name from the German verb laufen, to run, and local oral tradition traces the custom back to Germanic settlers said to have arrived in the area around the thirteenth century.
