The story

Drežniški Pust in Drežnica

Dreznicki pust is a masked Shrovetide tradition of Dreznica and Drezniske Ravne in the Soca Valley, run by a strict fantovscina, a young men's brotherhood, whose new members must secretly carve their own wooden masks as an initiation rite. Registered in Slovenia's Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage and designated a living masterpiece of national significance since April 2014.

In the villages of Dreznica and Drezniske Ravne, tucked in the Soca Valley near Kobarid, the Shrovetide custom known as Dreznicki pust is inseparable from a specific social institution: the fantovscina, a brotherhood of young unmarried men who take charge of the tradition each year.
