The story

Škoromatija Hrušica in Hrušica

Skoromatija is a centuries-old Carnival Saturday custom of the village of Hrusica in the Brkini region near Ilirska Bistrica, registered in Slovenia's Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage since April 2012. Masked skoromati go door to door through the village, believed to bring luck and fertility and drive away winter, with around 22 distinct mask types documented by the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum.

Few Slovenian carnival customs can claim a documented history as long as skoromatija, the Carnival Saturday tradition of Hrusica in the Brkini hills near Ilirska Bistrica.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The name skoromat traces to the Friulian term scaramatte, said to have reached the Brkini region after 1228, and the custom carries one of the oldest documented pedigrees of any Slovenian carnival tradition: a 1340 decree from the city magistrate of Cividale prohibited wearing the skoromat costume without permission, giving the custom roughly seven centuries of written history

02

The mystery stays covered

The lead character wears sheepskin, large waist bells called zvonci, and a pointed hat trimmed with paper flowers and ribbons

03

The city starts moving

Other figures include klescar or skopit, who blackens his face with soot and carries large wooden pliers to playfully catch girls, alongside poberin, pepeljuhar, and cunjar

04

The water draws everyone in

Masks are carved from a single block of linden or similarly soft wood
