Idrija Lace Festival in Idrija

The Idrija Lace Festival takes place every summer in Idrija, celebrating the town's bobbin lace-making tradition. Idrija lace anchors Slovenia's UNESCO-inscribed Bobbin lacemaking in Slovenia entry from 2018 and carries a protected geographical indication since 2000. The Idrija Lace School, opened in 1876, still trains lacemakers today, continuing a craft once exported across Europe and America by Franc Lapajne from 1875.

Idrija is a small town in western Slovenia known historically for mercury mining, but it is lace, not mercury, that gives the town its most enduring cultural identity today.
