The story

Animateka in Ljubljana

Animateka is Slovenia's largest animated film festival, held annually in Ljubljana beginning the first Monday of December and running about a week. Screenings take place at Kinodvor and the Slovenian Cinematheque, with exhibitions and public talks at Kinodvor and Kinodvor Cafe. The festival grew out of a 1990s Cinematheque monthly animation program curated by Igor Prassel and was founded in 2004.

Before Animateka existed as a festival, it existed as a habit.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Animateka's roots reach back to a 1990s monthly animation program at the Slovenian Cinematheque, curated by Igor Prassel, who became the festival's director and main selector when it launched as an annual event in 2004

02

The mystery stays covered

This gives the festival unusual curatorial continuity and depth of expertise in the field

03

The city starts moving

Its defining focus is East and Central European short animation, a corner of world cinema often overlooked by larger festivals, making Animateka a key showcase for filmmakers from the region

04

The water draws everyone in

It is organized by 2 Reels - Association for Reanimation of Storytelling (Drustvo 2 kolesi), and pairs film programs with exhibitions and public talks, extending the festival beyond the screening room into wider public engagement with the art of animation
