The story

City of Women Festival in Ljubljana

City of Women, known in Slovenian as Mesto žensk, is an international festival of contemporary arts held annually in Ljubljana every October. Founded in 1995 by the then Governmental Women's Policy Office of the Republic of Slovenia, it has been run since 1996 by the Association for the Promotion of Women in Culture. The festival presents women and gender-nonconforming artists across theatre, visual arts, film, and dance.

City of Women began in an unusual place for an arts festival: a government office.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

City of Women has built its identity around sustained visibility for women and gender-nonconforming artists in a cultural landscape where such representation has historically been scarce

02

The mystery stays covered

Since its founding, over 1,400 artists, curators, theorists, and activists have taken part, spanning theatre, visual arts, performance art, dance, film, video, literature, and multimedia, alongside talks and workshops that place artistic work in dialogue with feminist thought

03

The city starts moving

The festival unfolds across multiple institutional and alternative venues throughout Ljubljana, with the arthouse cinema Kinodvor serving as a recurring partner

04

The water draws everyone in

The 2026 edition, running October 2-13 under the theme 'feminist joy,' continues a program that treats gender not as a niche subject but as a lens for rethinking contemporary art itself

What moves first

Living ritual

City of Women grew out of a distinctly institutional feminist initiative: it was launched by a governmental Women's Policy Office rather than a grassroots collective

Water and renewal

Living ritual

then handed to a dedicated cultural association in 1996 to sustain it as an annual event

The sacred route

Living ritual

This origin situates it within a broader Central and Eastern European tradition of state-supported feminist cultural infrastructure built in the 1990s

The local code

Living ritual

and it continues to treat contemporary art as a space for examining gender directly rather than incidentally
