The story

Sonica Festival in Ljubljana

Sonica International Festival of Transitory Art is Ljubljana's longest-running festival of exploratory and experimental electronic music and sound art, founded in 2009. Historically held in spring, it merges music with visual and intermedia art through concerts, club nights, exhibitions, and talks, with a strong international focus on artists from the Balkans and Eastern Europe.

Sonica International Festival of Transitory Art started in 2009, and by the time a 2017 listing described it as reaching its ninth edition, it had already established itself as Ljubljana's, and by extension Slovenia's, longest-running festival dedicated to exploratory and experimental electronic music.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Sonica has earned its place as Slovenia's longest-running platform for exploratory electronic music and sound art by refusing to treat those genres as niche curiosities, instead merging them with visual and intermedia art into a single cross-disciplinary program

02

The mystery stays covered

Its primary home is Kino Šiška, where recent editions have hosted acts like The Bug, Violent Magic Orchestra, Gábor Lázár, and Shekuza, while past editions have also used MOTA, the Museum of Transitory Art

03

The city starts moving

Sonica maintains a close relationship with Kamizdat, a Slovenian label and collective devoted to field recordings, electro-acoustic music, and post-club electronic practices, evidenced by collaborative pre-events and performances from Kamizdat-signed artists

04

The water draws everyone in

Its regional focus on Balkan and Eastern European sound artists gives it a distinct identity among European experimental music festivals
