The story

Festival of Slovenian Film in Portorož

The Festival of Slovenian Film is Slovenia's premier national cinema showcase, held each October at Avditorij Portoroz. Its roots trace to the 1973 Slovene Film Week in Celje, later the Slovene Film Marathon, before relocating to Portoroz after independence. The festival awards the Vesna Awards, named for the heroine of the 1955 film Vesna, across categories including Best Film and Best Director.

The Festival of Slovenian Film did not begin in Portoroz, and it did not begin with that name.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival carries more than fifty years of continuous history, evolving from the 1973 Slovene Film Week in Celje into the 1991 Slovene Film Marathon and finally, after Slovenian independence, into the Festival of Slovenian Film based in Portoroz - a name attached in 2021

02

The mystery stays covered

It functions as the national competition and awards event for Slovenian cinema, centered on the Vesna Awards, named after the heroine of Frantisek Cap's 1955 film Vesna, with prizes for Best Film, Best Director, acting, and cinematography

03

The city starts moving

Its lifetime achievement prize, known as the Badjura Award after filmmaker Metod Badjura, was renamed the Milka and Metod Badjura Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023

04

The water draws everyone in

The 2025 edition, the 28th, screened 101 films across feature, documentary, and animated categories, opening with Miha Hocevar's Hidden People, a Slovenia-Serbia-Iceland co-production
