The story

Living Nativity Postojna Cave in Postojna

The Living Nativity in Postojna Cave transforms one of the world's largest show caves into an underground stage each December 25 to 30, with more than 100 performers acting out 18 biblical scenes across a 5-kilometer route. The roughly 90-minute experience combines a ride on the cave train with a walk through the cave's most striking chambers.

Postojna Cave draws visitors year-round for its scale, one of the largest karst cave systems open to the public in the world, but for six days each December it becomes something more unusual than a geological attraction: a fully staged retelling of the Christmas story, performed live within the cave's own chambers.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets this nativity apart from countless European Christmas reenactments is its setting: the scenes unfold deep inside Postojna Cave's karst chambers, using the natural acoustics, dramatic stalactite formations and engineered lighting of the cave system itself, rather than a church or town square

02

The mystery stays covered

Organizers describe it as the world's largest underground stage, and the scale reflects that ambition, with more than 100 local performers bringing 18 biblical scenes to life along a 5-kilometer route combining the cave's iconic train ride with a walking tour

03

The city starts moving

The production adheres strictly to the biblical account in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, distinct from more folkloric nativity traditions elsewhere

04

The water draws everyone in

Nearly four decades of continuous local involvement has turned the event into a genuine community tradition, reaching its 35th edition
