Kurentovanje Ptuj in Ptuj

Kurentovanje is Slovenia's largest Shrovetide carnival, held annually in the town of Ptuj, the oldest documented settlement in the country. Running for around ten to eleven days culminating on Shrove Sunday, the modern festival began in 1960, draws roughly 100,000 participants each year, and was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2017.

Kurentovanje's roots reach back further than recorded history in Ptuj, Slovenia's oldest documented town, where scholars trace the Kurent figure and its associated rites to pre-Christian folk customs, variously linked to ancient Slavic, Celtic, or Illyrian traditions that used costumed, bell-ringing figures to symbolically chase away winter and encourage a fertile spring.
