The story

Pippi Festival Velenje in Velenje

Pippi Festival (Pikin festival) fills the center of Velenje each September with the colorful world of Pippi Longstocking. Established in 1990, it is the largest children's festival in Slovenia, opening on Tito Square when Pippi arrives to a welcome of pirates, dancers, and drummers before the mayor hands her a symbolic sash of power.

Every year in the first week of September, the industrial Slovenian town of Velenje briefly becomes the fictional world of one of children's literature's most enduring characters.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival is built entirely around Astrid Lindgren's Pippi Longstocking character, called Pika Nogavicka in Slovenian, and has run continuously since 1990, reaching its 36th edition in 2025

02

The mystery stays covered

It draws its audience from across Slovenia rather than staying a local affair, and the program is unusually dense for a children's event: over 100 workshops, plays, concerts, and performances across multiple stages during the first week of September

03

The city starts moving

The opening ceremony, in which Velenje's mayor formally hands Pippi a symbolic sash of power on Tito Square, gives the week a distinct civic-meets-storybook character found in few other festivals of its kind
