Shell Money Festival in Langa Langa Lagoon
The Shell Money Festival, also called the Busu Shell Money Festival, celebrates shell money as a traditional Solomon Islands currency in Langa Langa Lagoon, Malaita. Hosted by Bataiasi Homestay and Langalanga lagoon communities, the mid-August event features cultural dances and demonstrations of shell-money exchange traditions.
Shell money has circulated in Malaita's Langa Langa Lagoon for generations, crafted by grinding clam and other shell material into small discs, drilling and polishing them, and stringing the results into lengths whose value depends on the quality, size, and consistency of the shell work.
