The story

Hargeisa International Book Fair in Hargeisa

The Hargeisa International Book Fair is Somaliland's largest annual cultural event, drawing writers, poets, and artists from across the Horn of Africa and beyond since its founding in 2008. Held every summer at the Hargeysa Cultural Centre, it is one of the biggest public book fairs anywhere in the region.

The Hargeisa International Book Fair began in 2008 as an initiative of Jama Musse Jama and the Redsea Online Culture Foundation, at a moment when Somaliland was working to rebuild civic and cultural institutions in the decades following its unilateral declaration of independence from Somalia and the devastating civil war years before it.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Founded by Jama Musse Jama in 2008, the fair grew from around 200 participants to roughly 10,000 within its first six years, an unusually fast expansion for a cultural event in a region with limited publishing infrastructure

02

The mystery stays covered

Each edition names a guest-of-honour country and an annual theme, from Freedom in its founding year to Continuity in 2026, and it pairs the main fair with the Somaliland Moving Library, a touring outreach program that carries books and the fair's spirit into towns across Somaliland the week before the main event opens
