Cape Town Fringe in Cape Town
The Cape Town Fringe is an annual performing arts festival held in Cape Town each spring, presenting theatre, comedy, dance and cabaret in an open, unjuried fringe format. It runs as a standalone Cape Town edition of the National Arts Festival's long-running Fringe programme, centered on the Artscape Theatre Centre and other city venues.
The Fringe model traces back to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, founded in 1947, where companies turned away from the juried Edinburgh International Festival simply began performing anyway, on the fringes of the official programme, creating an open-access alternative that has since been replicated in cities worldwide.
