Cape Town Minstrel Carnival in Cape Town

The Cape Town Minstrel Carnival, widely known as the Kaapse Klopse, is a Cape Malay minstrel festival held annually on 2 January in Cape Town, also called Tweede Nuwe Jaar (Second New Year) in Afrikaans. As many as 13,000 minstrels, organized into troupes called klopse, parade through the city in bright costumes, playing instruments and carrying colourful umbrellas.

Slavery at the Cape of Good Hope was formally abolished on 1 December 1834, but its legacy shaped one of Cape Town's most distinctive annual traditions.
