The story

Hilton Arts Festival in Hilton

The Hilton Arts Festival is a four-day multidisciplinary arts event held every August on the Hilton College campus in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. Founded in 1993 to echo the National Arts Festival in Makhanda, it brings theatre, live music, dance, craft and visual art together in one of the province's largest fixed-seat venues, drawing both regional performers and well-known South African names.

Every August, a private boys' boarding school in the green, mist-prone hills above Pietermaritzburg turns into one of the busiest arts venues in KwaZulu-Natal for four days.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's defining feature is its venue: the Hilton College Theatre, a 486-seat auditorium that ranks as the second-largest fixed-seating venue in KwaZulu-Natal, set inside a private boys' boarding school campus in the misty Midlands hills

02

The mystery stays covered

That combination of a serious performance space and a rural school setting gives Hilton a different character from South Africa's larger, city-based arts festivals

03

The city starts moving

Since 1993 it has been deliberately modelled on the National Arts Festival in Makhanda, compressing theatre, music, dance, craft markets and food stalls into a tight four-day August programme, and it has drawn recognised South African performers, including the late Johnny Clegg and pianist Christopher Duigan, alongside student and community productions
