Johannesburg Pride in Johannesburg
Johannesburg Pride is South Africa's and Africa's oldest and largest Pride event, tracing to the continent's first pride parade, held in Johannesburg on 13 October 1990 during the final years of apartheid. Now run each October, it combines a parade and celebration with an ongoing history of political advocacy for LGBTQIA+ rights.
On 13 October 1990, roughly 800 people gathered in Johannesburg for what became Africa's first Pride parade, organized by the Gay and Lesbian Organisation of the Witwatersrand, founded two years earlier by anti-apartheid activist Simon Nkoli.
