The story

National Arts Festival Makhanda in Makhanda

The National Arts Festival (NAF) is the largest performing arts festival on the African continent, held annually in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown), Eastern Cape, since its founding on 13 July 1973. Running roughly eleven days from late June into early July, it combines a curated Main programme with an open-entry Fringe festival.

On 13 July 1973, the first edition of what would become South Africa's National Arts Festival opened in Grahamstown, a small university city in the Eastern Cape built around Rhodes University.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

NAF's scale is exceptional for a small university town: it is the largest arts festival on the African continent and one of the largest performing arts festivals in the world by visitor numbers, with past editions drawing well over 200,000 attendees to Makhanda, home to Rhodes University

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival's dual structure, a formally curated Main programme alongside an open, unjuried Fringe, mirrors the Edinburgh Festival model and gives both established companies and emerging artists a route onto the same stage

03

The city starts moving

Beyond theatre, dance, comedy and live music, NAF runs visual art exhibitions, film screenings, talks, workshops, a large food and craft fair, historical city tours, and its own dedicated children's arts festival running in parallel

What moves first

Living ritual

NAF grew out of South Africa's 1820 Settlers commemorations in Grahamstown and evolved into a broad-based national performing arts institution

Water and renewal

Living ritual

continuing an Edinburgh-style Main programme and Fringe structure that has shaped how new South African theatre and dance work reaches national audiences for half a century
