The story

Klein Karoo National Arts Festival in Oudtshoorn

The Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK) is South Africa's largest Afrikaans-language arts festival, held annually in Oudtshoorn since 1994. Founded by businessman Nic Barrow and former Naspers public relations manager Andrew Marais, it draws more than 1,000 artists presenting over 200 productions and exhibitions across eight days each March or April.

In the early 1990s, Oudtshoorn businessman Nic Barrow and Andrew Marais, a former public relations manager for the South African publishing house Naspers, saw an opportunity in a town best known for ostrich farming: build a dedicated festival for Afrikaans arts in the heart of the Klein Karoo.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

KKNK holds a distinctive place in South African theatre because it functions as a launchpad: new Afrikaans stage productions are typically premiered at the festival before touring the rest of the country for the remainder of the year, making Oudtshoorn, for one week, the epicenter of Afrikaans performing arts programming decisions

02

The mystery stays covered

Officially recognized by the South African government as a national arts festival, it is also the country's largest arts festival by visitor numbers, an outsized distinction for a small Klein Karoo town whose economy depends heavily on ostrich farming most of the year

03

The city starts moving

The festival's arrival transforms Oudtshoorn's accommodation, halls and grounds into a temporary performing-arts infrastructure, with residents and institutions renting out space to absorb the influx
