AfrikaBurn in Tankwa Karoo
AfrikaBurn is South Africa's official Burning Man regional event, held each April or May in the semi-desert Tankwa Karoo of the Western Cape. Founded in 2007, it centers on a temporary art city built by participants, featuring ephemeral sculptures, mutant vehicles and elaborate costumes, with major artworks burned toward the end of the week-long gathering.
In 2007, South African arts promoter Paul Jorgensen returned from Burning Man in Nevada with a specific ambition: build an independent regional version of that event on home soil.
