The story

Seoul Street Arts Festival in Seoul

Korea's largest free outdoor performance festival, held over several days in late September or early October across Seoul's major public squares, including Seoul Plaza, Gwanghwamun Square, and along Cheonggyecheon stream. Grown out of the 2003 Hi Seoul Festival and renamed in 2016, it features acrobatics, physical theater, and puppetry from Korean and international street-arts companies.

Seoul Street Arts Festival grew out of the Hi Seoul Festival, a broader civic celebration the city launched in 2003, before city organizers spun off street performance specifically into its own dedicated event in 2013.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's distinguishing trait is its use of Seoul's most recognizable civic spaces, government squares, a restored urban stream, and a historic palace wall path, as simultaneous open-air stages, giving performances a backdrop no indoor venue could replicate

02

The mystery stays covered

Free, city-funded admission keeps it accessible at a scale unusual for street-arts festivals internationally, while its growth from a general civic celebration into a dedicated, specialized street-arts event in 2013 reflects a deliberate city strategy to build Seoul's presence in a genre it previously had little claim to
