Romeria del Rocio in Almonte
Over a hundred organized brotherhoods travel for days by foot, horseback, and ox-drawn wagon to the hamlet of El Rocio near Almonte, converging for Pentecost weekend. The pilgrimage culminates before dawn on Pentecost Monday when the Virgin's statue is carried through dense crowds in the Salto de la Reja.
The Romeria del Rocio converges on a single small hamlet, El Rocio in the municipality of Almonte, when more than a hundred organized brotherhoods (hermandades) arrive from across Andalusia and beyond, many having walked or ridden for several days through the Donana marshlands in ox-drawn covered wagons known as carretas.
