Carthaginians and Romans Cartagena in Cartagena
Cartagena's September festival reenacts the city's founding by Carthaginian general Hasdrubal and the Punic Wars against Rome, through rival costumed camps, or bandos, that organise processions, mock battles and camp-life displays across roughly ten days. Membership in a bando is a year-round social identity for many locals, giving the event an unusually participatory structure.
Cartagena stages one of Spain's largest historical reenactment festivals each September, recreating the city's founding by the Carthaginian general Hasdrubal in the third century BC and the Punic Wars that followed between Carthage and Rome for control of the Iberian peninsula's southeastern coast.
