Cascamorras in Guadix / Baza
Cascamorras reenacts a legendary dispute between the towns of Baza and Guadix over a statue of the Virgin of Piedad, when a costumed runner attempts to travel between the two towns while residents douse him with used engine oil and grease, a deliberately chaotic ritual held each September in both towns.
Cascamorras reenacts a local legend involving two towns and a single statue: in the story, a man from Guadix working on renovations in Baza discovered a statue of the Virgin of Piedad and attempted to carry it home, only for Baza's residents to insist the statue belonged to their town since it had been found there, leading to a dispute that the festival now replays every 6 September.
