San Sebastian Film Festival in San Sebastian
San Sebastian's annual film festival, running since 1953, ranks among the handful of top-tier competitive festivals worldwide alongside Cannes and Venice. Held each September at the glass Kursaal building on the city's riverfront, it awards the Golden Shell and is known equally for its red carpet premieres and its strong sidebar sections for new and Basque-language directors.
When San Sebastian's film festival launched in 1953, Spain had no other venue of comparable scale for international cinema, and the festival has held onto that founding role as the country's premier competitive showcase ever since.
