Holy Week Seville in Seville
Seville's week before Easter, when roughly sixty brotherhoods, some medieval in origin, carry ornate floats of Christ and the Virgin through the city to the cathedral and back. Costaleros bear the weight beneath swaying pasos while nazarenos in pointed capirote hoods process alongside, reorganizing the entire city around the processions' published routes.
For seven days and nights before Easter, roughly sixty religious brotherhoods, some founded in the Middle Ages, carry ornately dressed images of Christ and the Virgin Mary from their home churches through Seville's streets to the cathedral and back, in a procession tradition that reorganizes the entire life of a city of some 700,000 people around its passage.
