Farmers bring newly harvested paddy to the Sri Maha Bodhiya in Anuradhapura for the Aluth Sahal Mangallaya, offering the season's first rice in a golden ceremonial vessel with Buddhist chants before any household begins eating the new harvest, in a tradition tracing back to 1707.

Farmers from across Sri Lanka once travelled to Anuradhapura carrying small quantities of paddy from their first harvest, a practice that grew into the Aluth Sahal Mangallaya, or New Rice Festival, centered on the Sri Maha Bodhiya, the sacred fig tree grown from a cutting of the original Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.
