Poson Festival Sri Lanka in Anuradhapura/Mihintale/Nationwide

Poson full moon poya marks Buddhism's arrival in Sri Lanka, when the monk Mahinda converted King Devanampiyatissa near Mihintale over two thousand years ago. Observed nationwide with white clothing, temple sermons, pirith chanting, and free food stalls called dansal, it ranks second only to Vesak in religious importance. Mihintale and Anuradhapura draw the largest crowds, though smaller observances take place at temples across the island.

Each June, pilgrims dressed in white climb the rock steps of Mihintale to mark the day Buddhism reached Sri Lanka.
