The story

Colombo Vesak Zone in Colombo

Colombo's Vesak zones are citywide light displays for the Vesak full moon holiday each May, with major pandals, or thoranas, illuminating routes along Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Galle Face, and Beira Lake. Streets are pedestrianized for evening crowds, dansal stalls offer free food along the way, and smaller Vesak kudu paper lanterns decorate homes and buildings across the city.

Galle Face Green, Beira Lake, and Bauddhaloka Mawatha transform each May into a citywide showcase of light for Vesak, the full moon holiday marking the Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and death, all traditionally held to have occurred on the same calendar day in different years.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Colombo's citywide Vesak zones differ from the single-site Gangaramaya display by spreading illuminated pandals, government and corporate-sponsored thoranas, and community lantern displays across multiple viewing corridors, chiefly Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Galle Face Green, and areas around Beira Lake and Vihara Maha Devi Park

02

The mystery stays covered

Each large pandal typically narrates a scene from the Buddha's life or a Jataka story through sequenced lighting and recorded commentary, updated with a new theme each year

03

The city starts moving

Dansal food stalls run by workplaces, community groups, and temples line the routes, offering free meals and drinks to the evening crowds walking between displays
