Vel Festival Colombo

The Colombo Vel festival began in 1874 when a colonial cholera quarantine blocked devotees from the traditional Pada Yatra pilgrimage to Kataragama, prompting the Tamil community to create its own local observance instead. Held each July or August, its centerpiece is a silver chariot bearing Lord Murugan's image through Pettah, York Street, and Galle Road toward Bambalapitiya, accompanied by musicians and drummers.

A colonial-era cholera outbreak in 1874 gave rise to one of Colombo's most enduring Hindu festivals, when the British administration barred devotees from undertaking the traditional overland Pada Yatra pilgrimage to the Kataragama shrine in the island's southeast, citing fears the walking pilgrimage would spread disease.
