Jaffna Deepavali Festival in Jaffna
Jaffna's Hindu temples, including the prominent Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil, light up for Deepavali each October or November, when Tamil families across the Northern Province clean and decorate homes, prepare festive sweets and set rows of oil lamps along doorsteps at dusk. The festival doubles as a reunion occasion, drawing relatives back to the peninsula from Colombo and abroad.
Rows of clay lamps line the walls of Jaffna's Hindu temples each autumn as Deepavali, the festival of lights, spreads through the Northern Province capital and its surrounding villages.
