Esala Full Moon Poya in Kandy/Kataragama/Nationwide

Esala poya, in July or August, commemorates the Buddha's first sermon, his conception and renunciation, and the arrival of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Sri Lanka. It also marks the start of Vas, the monks' three-month rains retreat. Nationwide, it is observed with white clothing, temple sermons, and dansal stalls, while Kandy and Kataragama each stage their own major Esala peraheras.
