Duruthu Full Moon Poya in Kelaniya/Nationwide
Duruthu poya, the first full moon of the Sinhala new year cycle in January, commemorates the Buddha's legendary first visit to Sri Lanka at Mahiyangana, where he is said to have ended a violent tribal conflict. Observed nationwide with white clothing, temple sermons, and dansal food stalls, the poya also opens the traditional pilgrimage season to Sri Pada, or Adam's Peak.
January's first full moon reopens a story that Buddhist chronicles date to just nine months after Gautama Buddha's enlightenment: his legendary first visit to Sri Lanka.
