Madu Church Feast in Madhu
Sri Lanka's most venerated Catholic shrine, tucked inside a Mannar wildlife sanctuary, draws tens of thousands of pilgrims each August 15 for the Feast of the Assumption. Families camp on the grounds for days beforehand, and the statue of Our Lady of Madhu is processed after an open-air High Mass led by the Archbishop of Colombo and visiting bishops.
In the dry scrubland of Mannar district stands the Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu, a church whose statue of the Virgin Mary has drawn Tamil and Sinhalese Catholics alike for more than four centuries.
