Ramadan Cultural Nights in Sudan

Ramadan Cultural Nights refers to the traditional evening social and cultural life -- communal iftar meals, extended family gatherings, and Sudanese Ramadan customs -- that historically animated Khartoum and Omdurman during the fasting month. Since the April 2023 outbreak of war, both cities have experienced severe disruption to normal civic and religious life, making any organized public 'cultural nights' programming under this name uncertain.

Ramadan in Sudan has historically carried a strongly communal character, with the practice of large shared iftar tables set up along streets and in neighborhoods -- open to whoever happens to be present, including strangers and travelers -- serving as one of the most visible expressions of Sudanese hospitality culture, particularly in the dense urban environment of greater Khartoum, which includes Khartoum proper, Omdurman and Khartoum North across the confluence of the Blue and White Nile.
