Merowe Tourism and Heritage Festival in Merowe/Northern State
A heritage tourism festival proposed for the Merowe area of Northern State, intended to draw on the region's Kushite and Napatan archaeological legacy, including the nearby sacred mountain and temple complex of Jebel Barkal.
Modern Merowe, a town near the Fourth Cataract of the Nile in Northern State, is best known today as the site of the large Merowe Dam, completed in 2009, which displaced tens of thousands of people from the Nile valley in the area and remains a subject of ongoing controversy over resettlement and compensation.
