Deepavali in Suriname in Paramaribo/Nationwide
Deepavali, also known as Diwali, is a confirmed official national holiday in Suriname, observed by the country's Hindustani community with oil lamps, sweets, and family gatherings, falling on 8 November in 2026 according to Suriname's official public holiday calendar and celebrated in homes and temples nationwide.
Deepavali, more commonly known outside South Asia as Diwali, holds an especially significant place in Suriname's national calendar because of the size and enduring cultural presence of the country's Hindustani community, descendants of Indian indentured laborers brought to the Dutch colony beginning in 1873 to work plantations following the abolition of slavery.
