The story

Kiruna Festival in Kiruna

Kirunafestivalen is an annual city festival in Kiruna, Sweden's northernmost sizeable town, held over the first weekend after Midsummer since 2000. Founded by Mats Dahlberg, it brings mainstream pop and hip-hop acts to multiple outdoor stages named for local sponsors, drawing tens of thousands of visitors to a town best known for its iron-ore mine and Arctic location, ranking among the northernmost city festivals in Scandinavia.

Kiruna sits further north than almost any other sizeable town in Sweden, built around the LKAB iron-ore mine that has shaped its economy and, in recent years, forced the relocation of much of the town center as mining subsidence spreads beneath it.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Kirunafestivalen's identity is tied to its extreme northern setting: only Tromso's Bukta festival and the small Dansklacken pa Dosan gathering in Karesuando sit further north among Scandinavian city festivals, and Kiruna's near-midnight sun in late June means outdoor stages can run late into a sky that never fully darkens

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival is built around several branded stages, including the LKAB-Scenen, named for the state mining company whose iron-ore operations define the town's economy and are currently forcing part of Kiruna to relocate

03

The city starts moving

Its 20th-anniversary edition in 2019 drew more than 30,000 visitors over three days, a striking turnout for a town with a much smaller year-round population
