Storsjoyran in Ostersund
Storsjoyran is one of Sweden's oldest city festivals, tracing back to a 1963 satirical protest against a proposed county merger. Reborn in its current form in 1983, it fills central Ostersund's Badhusparken and Stortorget with roughly 40,000 paying visitors during its main three-day run each summer.
In 1963, a Jamtland resident named Yngve Gamlin responded to government plans to merge his home county with neighbouring Vasternorrland by declaring the satirical Republic of Jamtland, a piece of tongue-in-cheek regional protest theatre.
