Walpurgis in Uppsala in Uppsala
Walpurgis in Uppsala, Valborg, is Sweden's largest academic Walpurgis Night celebration, marking the arrival of spring on 30 April in Sweden's oldest university town. Students in white graduation caps gather in Carolina Rediviva's park to sing traditional spring songs and pop champagne corks at three in the afternoon, while engineering students race homemade rafts down the rapids of the Fyris River in the separately staged Forsranningen competition.
Valborgsmassoafton, Walpurgis Night, falls on 30 April across much of northern and central Europe, rooted in a pre-Christian spring festival that was later folded into the feast day of Saint Walpurga.
