The story

Fribourg International Film Festival in Fribourg

Fribourg International Film Festival was founded in 1980 by Magda Bossy as the Festival of Third World Film, built specifically to give cinema from Africa, Asia and Latin America a European platform. Renamed in the 1990s but unchanged in mission, FIFF requires competition entries to originate from those regions or Eastern Europe, and now draws more than 52,000 visitors each March to a bilingual university town between Bern and Lausanne, distinct from Switzerland's other Locarno- and genre-focused film festivals.

Fribourg International Film Festival was founded in 1980 by NGO administrator Magda Bossy under the name Festival of Third World Film, a title chosen deliberately to signal its founding purpose: giving cinema from Africa, Asia and Latin America a dedicated European platform at a time when such films rarely reached Swiss screens through ordinary distribution.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

FIFF's defining feature is regional focus rather than genre or national origin: founded in 1980 as the Festival of Third World Film by Magda Bossy, it exists specifically to platform cinema from Africa, Asia and Latin America, with competition rules still requiring entries from those regions or Eastern Europe today

02

The mystery stays covered

The name changed in the 1990s after filmmaker feedback, but the underlying mission never did

03

The city starts moving

Held each March in bilingual Fribourg, the festival frames its purpose as building understanding between what it calls the global North and South, favoring films that provoke discussion over award-season spectacle, and now draws more than 52,000 cinema visitors, among the largest attendance figures in French-speaking Switzerland's festival scene
