The story

Locarno Film Festival in Locarno

The Locarno Film Festival opened in 1946 with a fifteen-film program in a small town on Lake Maggiore and has grown into one of the world's most respected film festivals, historically known for championing Italian Neo-Realism and Eastern European New Wave cinema early. Its signature venue, the Piazza Grande, is an open-air screen in the town square seating 8,000 spectators, added in 1971. Each edition runs eleven days each August.

The Locarno Film Festival began in 1946 as a tourism-office initiative in a small town on Lake Maggiore, opening with a screening of O Sole Mio at the Grand Hotel and a program of just fifteen films, mostly American and Italian imports including Roberto Rossellini's Rome, Open City.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Locarno's identity rests on discovery rather than glamour: the festival built its reputation championing Neo-Realism and Eastern European New Wave filmmakers decades before those movements gained wider recognition, and its programming still favors first and second features and retrospectives over premiere-chasing

02

The mystery stays covered

The Piazza Grande, an 8,000-seat open-air screen built into the town's main square in 1971, turns nightly screenings into a shared civic event rather than an industry-only affair, letting locals and visiting cinephiles watch films together under the open sky

03

The city starts moving

That combination of critical seriousness and genuine public access is unusual among major film festivals
