Sechselauten Zurich in Zurich

Named for the medieval six o'clock bell marking the shift to longer summer working hours, Zurich's Sechselauten centers on burning the Boogg, a firecracker-stuffed snowman effigy, atop a bonfire in Sechselautenplatz each April. Local folklore reads the time it takes the Boogg's head to explode as a prediction for the coming summer. A formal guild parade in period dress and a children's costume parade the day before round out the event.

Zurich's spring guild festival takes its name from the six o'clock evening bell that, in the medieval working calendar, marked the shift from winter's shorter working day to summer's longer one, a change in daily rhythm the city still marks each April with a formal, guild-organized ceremony.
